It’s a non-invasive treatment, there is no noticeable pain or discomfort during the procedure…..
Shockwave treatment is regarded as the first line treatment for ED by the European Association of Urology and supported by several studies.
Available research has found few, if any, side effects of this treatment.
Electro Shockwave Treatment (ESWT) has been used or many treatments ranging from breaking up kidney stones initially to treating sports injuries like ligament strains and tendinitis. Now as an erectile dysfunction treatment used in Men’s health to treat erectile dysfunction attributed to poor blood flow to the penis.
ED is a frustrating condition that experts say affects some 50 percent of men between the age of 30-50.
Patients with feeble, imperfect erections and premature ejaculation can see improvement in erection right after first session.
According to clinical studies, all the patients with Peyronie’s disease had improvement in erectile function within first 3 sessions.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a method of treatment for men with erectile dysfunction. Low intensity shock waves have angiogenesis properties, which encourages the formation of new blood vessels at the targeted area.
Shock waves are also used in other forms of treatment, notable examples being physiotherapy and the breaking down of kidney stones in lithotripsy. The key difference here is that treatment for erectile dysfunction uses low intensity shockwaves, while treatment for physiotherapy and kidney stones use medium intensity and high intensity shock waves respectively.
Some of the common treatments for erectile dysfunction are:
The current available treatments for erectile dysfunction do not address or correct the cause of the condition. The underlying cause of erectile dysfunction is a lack of blood flowing to the penis that prevents an erection.
While medication (such as Viagra or Cialis) and intracavernosal injection can increase the blood flow to the penis, these methods do not solve the poor blood flow in a man’s penis.
Erectile dysfunction is caused by a poor blood flow in the corpora cavernosa, which are the tissues in the penis that contain the blood flowing to the penis during an erection. The low-intensity shock waves used in ESWT can stimulate and promote the creation of blood vessels, which can potentially improve or even cure a person’s erectile dysfunction.
The low-intensity shock waves create a form of small-scale trauma (known as microtrauma) similar to how muscle fibers break down and rebuild during exercise. This microtrauma stimulates the release of angiogenic factors, leading to the formation of new blood vessels in the penis’ corpora cavernosa. The formation of these new blood vessels will promote better blood flow for an erection.
A transducer is applied to the corpora cavernosa at three distinct areas.
The recommended treatment plan is to have six sessions of treatment, each is carried out once a week. If you are short on time, you can get treatment done every three to four days instead. More severe cases of erectile dysfunction may require more sessions depending on their reaction to treatment.
Over the course of the six sessions, our doctor will apply shockwaves to the penis to stimulate the formation of new blood vessels around the penis.
No form of anesthesia or sedation is required for this treatment. It is a painless procedure, although the patient might feel discomfort at certain levels of intensity. The shock wave’s level of intensity can be adjusted accordingly.
It takes within 15 to 20 minutes for the shock waves to be administered to the penis.
Besides erectile dysfunction, extracorporeal shock wave therapy can also be used to treat Peyronie’s disease and Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS).
The only difference in treating these conditions is the number of sessions recommended and the areas targeted for treatment.
Electro Shockwave Treatment (ESWT) In A Detailed View
ESWT emits low intensity shockwaves into the penis causing new, healthy blood vessels to develop thus rendering the previous unhealthy blood vessels obsolete. The previously unhealthy blood vessels were causing poor blood flow into the penis resulting in erectile dysfunction.
ESWT as a cure for erectile dysfunction will only work if the cause of the erectile dysfunction is a vascular cause. Poor blood supply to the penis can be caused by long standing illnesses like Diabetes Mellitus or Hypertension which are common in the population.
If the cause of erectile dysfunction is not related to the condition of the blood vessels, the treatment will not be beneficial to you. Other causes of erectile dysfunction include hormonal status, stress, nutrition and general wellbeing.
ESWT cannot however cure the problem of erectile dysfunction immediately. It usually works best with medications and would require a few sessions to gain full effect.
Using the IIEF score ( International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire), studies have shown a 76% improvement in patients undergoing ESWT treatment for erectile dysfunction. Another study also showed that 21 out of 29 patients scored favourably in the Erection Hardness Score after treatment with ESWT.
In cases of severe ED (where an erection was nearly impossible even with medication), 72.4% of patients showed remarkable improvement and were able to have spontaneous erections after getting ESWT therapy in combination with oral medications.
A consultation is first required with our Consultant Urologist . Please do bear in mind that you will only be treated by a Certified Urologist Specialist By The National Specialist Register to determine the cause of the erectile dysfunction. If it is found to be of vascular origin, ESWT may be prescribed.
Firstly, a clear gel will be applied on the base of the penis and the penis making sure to cover all sides. Then the treatment probe will be placed on the skin of the penis and the base of the penis.
The probe will then deliver low intensity shockwaves into the desired area while the operator moves it about the treatment area. The process has been reported as painless with most patients not having any sort of discomfort throughout the procedure. Some have reported a tingling sensation in the penis or pelvis area though.
You will require a total of 6 treatment sessions in the following series of treatment plan options.
Each session of the ESWT treatment will last about 20 to 30 minutes.
Most patients will see an improvement in the erectile dysfunction problem two weeks after completion of treatment.
In the off chance that there is no improvement in the problem, some patients may be advised to undergo another cycle of six treatment sessions. This can be done as soon as three weeks after the completion of the first session.
As earlier mentioned, treatment works best with medications taken throughout the duration of the treatment as per doctors’ advise to improve the health of the blood vessels in the penis.
It will be conducted with complete privacy and SOP . We ensure that our patients privacy is kept absolutely private & our ED clinic days are strictly only for Erectile Dysfunction treatment only . There will be no other procedure be done other then ED.
